THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF TOMB RAIDER ON UNREAL ENGINE 5

In April of 2022, Crystal Dynamics announced the next mainline entry in the Tomb Raider series would be built on Unreal Engine 5 and unveiled a brand new logo. The as-yet-untitled new Tomb Raider game is a single-player, narrative-driven adventure that continues Lara Croft's story in the Tomb Raider series.

The following day, former Days Gone Game Director Jeff Ross announced he had joined Crystal Dynamics as Design Director, and later in July Belinda Garcia joined Crystal Dynamics as Game Writer and Narrative Designer.

In October of 2022, developers from Crystal Dynamics discussed moving from a proprietary video-game engine to Unreal Engine 5 during Unreal Fest 2022. Crystal Dynamics spoke on the transition from their own proprietary Foundation Engine to Unreal Engine 5, how this change affected the development pipeline and the challenges the studio faced.

In December of 2022, Embracer Group and Amazon Games announced they had reached an agreement under which Crystal Dynamics will develop a new multi-platform Tomb Raider title, with Amazon Games providing full support and publishing the game globally. Scot Amos, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics, spoke about transformative media and said Amazon Games would redefine what a publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider.

In January of 2023, Samantha Wallschlaeger was appointed Lead Writer at Crystal Dynamics and was tasked with working on the next Tomb Raider video-game. The former writer on Star Wars The Old Republic and Mass Effect: Andromeda confirmed her role on Twitter and invited talent to join her on the future of Tomb Raider.

Later that month, Amazon reportedly strikes a deal with Dmitri M. Johnson's dj2 Entertainment for a massive rights deal for the Lara Croft-helmed franchise to 'build out a connected world of Tomb Raider, with the video game, TV series and film all interconnected in a fashion akin to what Marvel has already accomplished.'

In February of 2023, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors stated that of the 31 AAA games in the pipeline scheduled to release by FY 27/28, Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal count five projects in development.

In May of 2023, Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics said business continues as usual following an announcement from parent company Embracer Group that a two billion dollar deal for a transformative partnership had fallen through.

In November of 2023, Amazon Games said it was focusing its efforts on Prime Gaming and publishing upcoming titles including Tomb Raider amid reports of job losses within its gaming division.

In February of 2024, Crystal Dynamics officially unveiled their unified vision for Lara Croft. The artwork was teased on the official Tomb Raider website and the studio later confirmed the news on the official Tomb Raider X page.

In February of 2024, Embracer Group revealed the publishing deal for Tomb Raider was valued at SEK 500 million (47M USD) during a presentation on the interim report for Q3 2023/24.

In May of 2024, Dmitri Johnson and Michael Goldberg discussed adopting a transmedia strategy across film, TV, video-games, publishing, live activations, and consumer products during a panel organised by SXSW. "There's a franchise we're working on that I can't get too deep into where we are trying to do animation, live action film, live action TV, a trilogy of games that are being built in Unreal 5 and looking at if there's a way to use assets that are being created on the games side to maybe help expedite things on the live action production side." Dmitri Johnson said during the SXSW panel.

Later that month, Amazon Games announced that is looking for a Senior Publishing Producer to join their Tomb Raider Franchise team. In partnership with Crystal Dynamics, Amazon Games is 'developing and publishing the next AAA Tomb Raider video-game.'

In August of 2024, Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann told IGN the upcoming Tomb Raider video-game powered by Unreal Engine 5 is 'going well' and 'moving forward' and Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics is 'fairly sheltered from everything going on with Embracer.' Hartmann was responding to a question on whether turmoil at parent company Embracer Group would impact the studio.

In October of 2024, a landing page for an upcoming Tomb Raider video-game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Amazon Game Studios appeared on review aggregate website Metacritic. The listing describes the project as a 'linear action adventure' for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

As of December of 2024, fans of Tomb Raider await the official unveiling of Tomb Raider on Unreal Engine 5.
