TOMB RAIDER THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS MARKS TWENTY-THREE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Twenty-three years ago, Lara Croft Tomb Raider The Angel of Darkness was released in North America for the PlayStation 2. It was the final Tomb Raider game developed by Core Design before the series moved to a new developer.

The game introduced a new engine designed for the PlayStation 2 and contemporary PC hardware. It featured updated character models, expanded character interaction systems and player choices that could influence progression. The story takes Lara Croft from Paris to Prague as she investigates a series of events linked to the Obscura Paintings, a group of 14th-century artworks.

Set after the events of Tomb Raider The Last Revelation, the game portrays Lara as a fugitive following the murder of her former mentor, Werner Von Croy, for which she is suspected. Her investigation leads her into criminal networks, murders and a plot involving alchemy and long-running conflicts connected to the paintings.

The game also introduced Kurtis Trent, a second playable character who is pursuing the antagonist, Eckhardt. The anniversary is being marked with the release of archival material, including development documents and content previously published during the Tomb Raider 25th anniversary programme.
