The recent Challenge Mode update for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered has faced criticism, with players reporting numerous technical issues, including disappearing FMVs, freezing subtitles, crashes, and corrupted save files. Developed by third-party studio Magic Media and released by Aspyr Media, the update introduced new objectives and unlockable outfits for Lara Croft, and some players have sought assistance from the original developers, Saber Interactive, which was not involved in the patch.
Adding clarity to the situation, a former developer posting under the pseudonym reborninshadow explained on Tomb Raider Forums that Saber Interactive had already completed its contractual obligations for the remastered trilogy and had no authority to implement additional updates without a new agreement with Aspyr Media. The statement underscored that decisions about patch contents and release schedules are controlled by the publisher, not the development team, and expressed hope that ongoing community feedback could help guide fixes in future updates.
"Aspyr has the rights for the remasters, Saber can't work on the games without signing a contract for it and we already completed our contracts and delivered all the patches/content that was agreed on. We could have possibly done more patches and sign a new contract for more patches if there was interest from both sides. Our dev team did want to do a patch 5 with at the very least some of the improvements and fixes from the second remaster trilogy but it didn't end up happening," reborninshadow posted on Tomb Raider Forums
"For those who don't understand this process, the dev team doesn't get to decide how many patches the game should have, when they should be released or the full contents of the patch. All of that needs to be agreed on with the publisher/CD. The most realistic thing that can be done is that the community keeps highlighting and documenting the bugs and issues with the patch and hope they get fixed."
The update has already begun affecting user review scores across digital storefronts, highlighting the scale of dissatisfaction with the Challenge Mode patch. While Aspyr Media has yet to comment on the situation, many players argue that technical issues currently overshadow its intended improvements, leaving the remastered trilogy's post-launch expansion in a contentious state.
