MURTI SCHOFIELD ON CRAFTING TOMB RAIDER THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS
[ 29 January 2025 ]
Crystal Dynamics has published an interview with the lead narrative designer and concepts for Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Murti Schofield, ahead of the release of Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered. The interview was published on the official Tomb Raider blog, along with concept art from the development of the video game.
Murti Schofield joined Core Design in 2000 with a fresh vision to evolve Lara Croft's story and introduce a new, darker tone to the franchise. Schofield's work on the game was influenced by his personal interests in archaeology, ancient history, and mysterious societies. One of his key contributions was crafting Kurtis Trent, the franchise's first secondary playable character, who was envisioned for potential spin-off adventures.
The ambitious narrative of The Angel of Darkness introduced a more serious and noir-inspired Lara Croft, which continues to captivate fans to this day. Schofield wanted to explore Lara's evolution, focusing on her transformation into a grimmer, more driven character who is less concerned with tomb raiding and more focused on uncovering the truth behind her mentor, Werner von Croy's betrayal. This change in direction was marked by Lara's loss of her iconic backpack, symbolising the end of her earlier, more adventurous self.
In addition to Lara's transformation, Schofield introduced Kurtis Trent, a character inspired by a range of heroic figures such as Robin Hood, Indiana Jones, and James Dean. Kurtis was designed as a fierce, independent figure with a complex backstory, including his connection to the Lux Veritatis, a secret society battling dark forces. His character also brought unique abilities, such as telekinetic powers and the 'Wolf Sense,' which were initially showcased in cutscenes but will now be restored in the upcoming Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered.
Schofield highlighted his joy in directing the voice acting sessions, particularly with talented actors like Jonell Elliott, Eric Loren, and Joss Ackland, who brought the world and characters to life in a way that made them feel real. Looking back, Schofield expressed gratitude for the lasting appreciation from fans, acknowledging the dedication and creativity of the entire team behind The Angel of Darkness.
