TOMB RAIDER RETROSPECTIVE FROM FORMER CORE DESIGN DEVELOPER
[ 29 March 2025 ]
A former Core Design developer is taking a nostalgic deep dive into his work on Tomb Raider Chronicles, 28 years after he first joined the development team. Andy Sandham, who worked as a level designer on the Black Isle levels, is sharing his experiences and insights through a series of videos on his YouTube channel, revisiting the levels he created almost three decades ago.
In his introductory video, Sandham reminisces about his time at Core Design, stating: "My name is Andy Sandham. In 1998, I was told I would be joining the four-person design and environment art team for Tomb Raider III, with the sole responsibility of inventing, designing, and creating an entire set of game levels for that title. It was my first job as a level designer."
His YouTube series explores the challenges and triumphs of working on the original Tomb Raider video games, from designing complex environments to overcoming the technical limitations of the era. For long-time fans, Sandham's commentary provides fascinating insights into how one of Lara Croft's most beloved adventures came to life.
