Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt were named by cinemagoers as the big screen's most glamorous stars. The Moulin Rouge actress came top in a survey of female film idols with 52 per cent of the vote, far ahead of her nearest rival, Tomb Raider's Angelina Jolie, who polled just 18 per cent.

They were followed by Julia Roberts in third place, and Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow in fourth, according to the poll by mobile phone company Orange.

Kidman also won out over her ex-husband Tom Cruise's new girlfriend and Vanilla Sky co-star, Penelope Cruz, in fifth place. Pitt, who stars in Ocean's Eleven, was the most popular male actor, winning by 53 per cent. But he only narrowly defeated the surprise second place Russell Crowe, who stars in A Beautiful Mind, which is out next Friday.

The pair left their rivals far behind, with Tom Cruise in third scoring just 3 per cent and Robert De Niro and Robert Redford in joint fourth, with only one per cent each. The survey polled 1000 filmgoers over 16 ahead of the Orange British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs, which are presented on February 24.
