TOMB RAIDER LEGACY OF ATLANTIS DEVELOPERS CONFIRM NEW FOOTAGE FOR NEXT WEEK

IGN spoke to Crystal Dynamics Game Director Raul Siqueira and Flying Wild Hog Art Director Arek Tomaszewski at Gamescom 2026 about the approach to reimagining Tomb Raider in Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis. Discussing the T-Rex encounter and how the team approached adapting the sequence from the 1996 game, Siqueira said the developers wanted to retain elements of the original while changing how the encounter plays out.

"From a game point perspective, it was important to note the differences between the T-Rex encounter. As iconic as it was in 1996, we knew we wanted to do something different with it. Echoing back to the roots of the Survivor games, we got really good at getting Lara to be chased by a bear, chased by an avalanche. It felt very natural to go, hey, that would be a really cool cinematic moment, and we get to do more screen time, make sure that the T-Rex is celebrated, and that there's more content for players."

The developers also considered how material from the original games would sit alongside elements introduced in more recent Tomb Raider titles. On maintaining that balance, Siqueira said: "Although it's a new modern take on it, we knew that when we were coming back to the classics and we were looking at the stuff we've done recently, that balance between what is new and what is old is important to keep. It felt very natural to continue that trend moving forward."

New footage and areas from the game were also being shown behind closed doors at Gamescom, with the material due to be released publicly the following week. "We are actually showing some new footage, some new areas, here at Gamescom this week behind closed doors. It will be available to the public next week and I am very excited for them to see what that is," Siqueira concluded.

Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is a single-player action-adventure game based on the original Tomb Raider from 1996. It follows Lara Croft on a journey to uncover the secrets of Atlantis, taking players through locations including Peru, Greece and Egypt, as well as an island associated with the central story.

The game revises locations, puzzles and encounters from the original while adding new mechanics and story material. It also includes updated versions of sequences from the 1996 game, including the encounter with a T-Rex, and expands connections between Lara's first adventure and subsequent events in her story.

Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on 12 February 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The game will be available in Standard, Deluxe and Collector's editions, with each edition containing different content. The Deluxe and Collector's editions will also include 48 hours of early access.
