TOMB RAIDER I-III REMASTERED CHALLENGE MODE UPDATE RECEIVES MIXED RECEPTION
[ 13 March 2026 ]
Aspyr Media has released a new update for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered introducing a Challenge Mode, but the patch has drawn a notably mixed response across social media and community forums. While the update aims to add additional objectives and replay value to the remastered collection, early reactions from players have focused less on the new mode itself and more on a range of technical and presentation issues reported following the patch's release.
Among the most widely discussed criticisms are complaints about the visual quality of certain newly introduced outfits, with players noting textures that appear noticeably lower in quality than those used elsewhere in the remastered package. The update has also prompted questions about its development process. Giovanni Lucca, formerly Lead Artist at Saber Interactive, the studio responsible for the original remaster project, stated on X that neither he nor the original development team were involved in the creation of the Challenge Mode update, clarifying that the patch was produced independently of the original developers.
"Hey folks, just to clarify. I was not involved in the art direction of this new patch with the Challenge Mode for Tomb Raider I-II-III Remastered. None of the original developers at Saber were involved in it," Giovanni Lucca wrote on X.
Among the community discussions, members of Tomb Raider Forums have also been informally polled on their reaction to the update. In the poll, a clear majority of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the patch, with approximately 82 per cent indicating that they were unhappy with the changes introduced in the Challenge Mode update. The results reflect the broader critical tone seen across forum threads discussing the patch's reported bugs and visual issues.
A consolidated list of bugs compiled by members of Tomb Raider Forums highlights a broad array of technical issues affecting gameplay and presentation across the collection. Reported problems include the Lara's Home FMV sequence in Tomb Raider I failing to play, the main menu music continuing during gameplay in situations where no background music should be present, and subtitles occasionally freezing on screen. Other issues cited by players include traps in certain Tomb Raider III levels failing to damage Lara, the ability to complete the Home Sweet Home level in Tomb Raider II without defeating all enemies, and texture glitches when loading save files while using some of the newly added outfits.
Additional reports reference audio irregularities, animation glitches, and localisation errors. Players have described instances of Lara's braid behaving incorrectly in Camera Mode or during death animations, simultaneous sound effects triggering during item collection in Tomb Raider II, broken shadows during the Nevada quad sequence in Tomb Raider III, and problems affecting Chinese localisation. Other anomalies noted by forum users include sharks continuing to move after death, ambient audio playing incorrectly when drowning, and cheats activating unexpectedly during incomplete input sequences.
At the time of writing, Aspyr Media has not publicly responded in detail to the reported issues. The update's reception therefore remains divided: some players welcome the addition of new challenges to the classic titles, while others argue that the technical problems currently overshadow the intended improvements.
