NEW LIVE-ACTION TOMB RAIDER SERIES GETS ALICIA VIKANDER'S BLESSING

Eight years after Alicia Vikander starred as Lara Croft in the 2018 Tomb Raider film, the iconic video game character is returning in a new adaptation, this time as a TV series from Amazon MGM Studios. Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and starring Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), the live-action Tomb Raider series has already released its first images, with filming now underway in London, United Kingdom.

Vikander, currently in Sweden for the Gothenburg Film Festival, shared her support for Turner via MovieZine, saying, "Me and Sophie have met quite a few times over the years at the Louis Vuitton show and things like that. I loved when I saw the first picture. Phoebe is so strong. It's kind of gone full circle now." Reflecting on her own time as Lara Croft, Vikander described it as a fun experience, despite plans for a sequel never materialising.

While she won't return to the role, Vikander expressed interest in future action films, enjoying the physical challenge and immersive preparation involved. Meanwhile, her latest project, the political drama Trollkarlen i Kreml, is set to premiere in Swedish cinemas on 13 March 2026.

Sophie Turner will lead an ensemble cast that also features Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie, and Bill Paterson in the latest screen adaptation of the long-running Tomb Raider video game franchise, with executive production shared by Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics, alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins for Wells Street Films, and additional executive producers Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson for Story Kitchen, as well as Michael Scheel for Legendary Television.
