Teenage bubble-gum queen Britney Spears is aiming to displace Core Design's hapless archaeologist Lara Croft from the video-game pedestal after signing a deal with computer games manufacturer THQ, People Magazine reports today.

No stranger to technological innovation herself by being the first to incorporate 3D technology on her music DVD which features a variety of on-stage viewing angles and interactive menus, the Princess of Pop hopes to migrate the same success to the console platform. The first in a series of video-games starring the teenage diva has been penciled to launch in spring.

An industry source close to the Britney camp said: "This will open up the gaming market, which is already incredibly lucrative. It could be a very canny move and ensure the cash keeps rolling in..."

A source close to the TRC camp is still laughing.
