An internet campaign to boost Lara croft's race to her own road name in Derby has generated more than 17,000 votes, eclipsing the nearest competitor Merlin who currently stands at 207 votes, reports This Is Derbyshire. Exposure on numerous gaming web sites and blogs has attracted votes from all over the world.

Lucy Care, cabinet member for planning and transport said she was pleased to see so many people had voted on-line. She said: "Lara Croft has become a popular icon of modern, turn-of-the-century culture. Her popularity in the polls has captured the imagination of people throughout the world but this is no surprise."

Lara Croft Way had been shortlisted as a possible candidate along with John Flamsteed Way, Griffon Way, Merlin Way, Sorocold Way, Steve Bloomer Way, Eagle Way and Mercian Way. Voting will conclude January 31, 2010.
