Polish
archaeologists have unearthed what they believe
are the skeletal remains of 16th century cleric
Nicholas Copernicus during an excavation of Frombork
Cathedral on Poland's Baltic coast, Reuters
reports this morning.
A computer
reconstruction of the skull showed the head of
a grey-haired man of 70, the age Copernicus died.
The analysis also revealed a scar above the left
eye and a broken nose, both injuries sustained
by Copernicus during his lifetime.
Nicolaus
Copernicus was a Polish astronomer, mathematician
and economist who developed the heliocentric (Sun-centered)
theory of the solar system in a form detailed
enough to make it scientifically useful.
Copernicus
also asserted that the earth and the other planets
revolved around the sun, toppling the then widespread
belief that the world was the center of the universe,
Reuters reports.
