Rupert Murdoch's media empire News Corporation is set to acquire IGN Entertainment in a deal worth some $650 million, according to Games Industry. The deal, exposed in The Wall Street Journal, comes as the result of a bidding war for the internet company between News Corp and rival media group Viacom.

IGN Entertainment is a leading community-based Internet media and services company for video gaming and other forms of digital entertainment. The group owns and operates a network of branded web sites that provide content and services to consumers and publishers and developers of video games.

"With the acquisition of IGN and its 28m unique users, we have gone a long way toward achieving two of our key strategic objectives in our efforts to become a leading and profitable internet presence." Rupert Murdoch said.
