International Olympic Committee has announced that London, England, will host the 2012 Olympic Games. London faced favourites Paris in a final showdown following two years of intense completion and bidding. The decision by IOC to select London was met by cheers from thousands of supporters crowding Trafalgar Square.

London put forward an impressive portfolio to the IOC in the run up to the announcement in Singapore, including proposed major development in the East End of London, and improvements to the Millennium Dome, which will be used as an indoor gymnasium. A new railway system will also be build to transport athletes from the Olympic Village to competition arenas.
