After
tasting success in ringtones and logo content
downloads, mobile phone operators in the region
believe they have another winner with wireless
gaming, says Davina Yeo, associate director of
wireless research at IDC Asia-Pacific. 'Over the
past year, wireless gaming has taken a huge leap
forward as operators began recognising the revenue
potential that the service offers,' Ms Yeo said.
'The next 12 months will see operators refining
their strategies and targeting a larger audience
beyond just the early adopters,' she added.
In
affluent countries in the region such as Singapore,
South Korea, Hong Kong and Australia, wireless
games based on popular PC games such as Tom Clancy
Splinter Cell, Lara Croft Tomb Raider, and others
are gaining popularity. 'More consumers in these
countries are willing to fork out the extra dollar
to pay for premium games,' Ms Yeo said. 'In the
next 12 months, expect to see a higher level of
gaming as vendors boost graphics performance,
enhance audio capabilities, refine user interfaces
and offer multi-player, multi-carrier and multi-platform
support for wireless gamers.'
