The search
is on for a Yorkshire Champion to spend the day
with top model Nell McAndrew. Nell is backing
the competition run by national volunteering charity
TimeBank and the Yorkshire Evening Post to search
for West Yorkshire's hottest male volunteers.
The competition aims to recognise these commendable
men and to inspire more men to volunteer. Throughout
September, YEP readers are encouraged to nominate
men from West Yorkshire who make a real difference
by volunteering their own time for the benefit
of others.
Five
winners will each be given £200 to donate to their
cause and will spend a morning volunteering with
Nell, who is known for her support of local charity
initiatives. "We want people to nominate their
'Yorkshire Champions' - male volunteer co-workers,
husbands, boyfriends, fathers, brothers," said
Nell. "Our Yorkshire Champions could be helping
others through football coaching, handyman schemes,
mentoring or anything else that has a positive
effect on people's lives."
Nell
added: "Volunteering is not just for women, in
fact there are some areas of volunteering which
are more suited to males. "There are plenty of
young lads who need a male mentor to look up to
and everyone has a skill to offer, be it practical
or just listening." Nell, born in Leeds, said
she is proud of her Yorkshire roots and knows
there are plenty of male champions to be found
in the county. "This competition should help us
to find those volunteers who are making a difference
to other people's lives. "Volunteering is rewarding
for those who are giving their time and to those
benefiting from someone else's time."
The competition
aims to raise awareness about volunteering and
encourage Yorkshire's men to give time. Although
74 per cent of volunteers in Yorkshire are female,
TimeBank recently asked 100 men in Leeds if they
would volunteer - 76 per cent said they would
if they had more time. To nominate yourself or
your Yorkshire Champion, fill in the coupon, right,
or telephone 08456014008 before September 20.
Anyone interested in volunteering should call
0845 601 4008 or log onto www.timebank.org.uk.
