Courageous
Danielle Skilbeck beamed with delight as she helped
to launch the 2004 Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards
with her new best friend - Nell McAndrew. The
Otley six-year-old whose body was ravaged by meningitis
happily cuddled up to Nell as they posed for photographs
to support the awards launch. Danielle told the
Leeds model how she had once visited London, where
Nell now lives.
The awards,
now in their 11th year, celebrate the achievements
of young people from across the Yorkshire region
in a range of fields, including sport, the arts
and education, and are sponsored by Yorkshire
Law Firm of the Year, McCormicks Solicitors. Last
year, Danielle stole the show when when she won
the Youngster of the Year Award.
Nell,
the Personality of the Year winner in 2002, said:
"There is so much talent in Leeds and these awards
are a great way of finding those special people.
I am always proud to say I come from Yorkshire
and know how many wonderful people there are here."
She was also full of praise for Danielle: "She's
really loving and we have been having cuddles
all day. She's such a special little girl." Danielle
is managing well after losing both her hands and
both her lower legs to meningitis in 2002. She
said: "I really like Nell."
The awards
have raised more than £300,000 for the children's
charity, NCH, to date and are open to people aged
under 35 who live, work or were born in Yorkshire.
They celebrate talent and achievement in the Arts,
Education, Management and Enterprise and Sports,
while the Unsung Hero, Youngster of the Year,
which is for those aged under 12, and Personality
of the Year, recognise other forms of excellence.
New for
2004 is the NCH Yorkshire Young Achiever Award
to recognise the achievements of a young person
connected to NCH. McCormicks has sponsored the
event since it started in 1993. Senior partner
Peter McCormick said: "We strongly believe that
young people can achieve amazing things."
