Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie has agreed to ignite the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games staged in Athens, Greece on August 13 2004. The 29-year-old actress, star of recent videogame adaptation Lara Croft Tomb Raider and goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), will run the final leg bearing the Olympic torch to conclude an international relay across five continents to commemorate the official opening of the 2004 Olympic Games.

In a letter to Athens Games organisers released via Reuters on Tuesday, Jolie confirmed her role as an official torchbearer. "I would consider it an honour to run with the Olympic torch as a gesture of hope for refugees and to express my active support for sport and world peace," Jolie said. "The preferred time for me to run would be 1800 or 1900 hours." The former Oscar winner has just completed filming Taking Lives and will begin shooting the Doug Liman pic Mr. and Mrs. Smith later this year.
