Eidos Montreal has confirmed Deus EX 3 will be powered by the same game engine that props up Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Developed internally by U.S. studio Crystal Dynamics, the original game engine assisted in the resurgence of Lara Croft after Eidos ported development of the franchise from Core Design.

"We chose the Crystal engine because we plan to help develop this engine more and then share it back with the rest of the company," Stephane D'Astous told Develop. "Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders - there are no doubts about the approach, and we have few uncertainties."

Crystal Dynamics will be mobilising a brand new engine for Tomb Raider 8, recently unveiled as Tomb Raider Underworld. The game - due to release in 2008 - is intending to court only Next-Gen consoles including Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and Windows PC.
