CRYSTAL DYNAMICS PAYS TRIBUTE TO ORIGINAL TOMB RAIDER DEVELOPERS
[ 28 October 2026 ]
Crystal Dynamics has marked the 30th anniversary of Tomb Raider by acknowledging the original development team at Core Design in Derby. The studio shared a message on social media platform X alongside photographs from this weekend's Tomb Raider Derby event, which commemorated the franchise's origins in the city.
"Before Lara Croft became a gaming icon, a small team at Core Design in Derby was bringing Tomb Raider to life in 1996. Thirty years later, we're grateful for everything they created and proud to carry that legacy forward as Tomb Raider's story continues. Cheers to the team that started it all," Crystal Dynamics shared on X.
Development of the Tomb Raider series passed from Core Design to Crystal Dynamics in 2006, beginning with Tomb Raider Legend. The studio subsequently developed Tomb Raider Anniversary in 2007 and Tomb Raider Underworld in 2008, followed by a reboot of the franchise with Tomb Raider in 2013 and Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2015. Eidos Montreal, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, led development of Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018, completing the Survivor Trilogy.
Crystal Dynamics is currently coordinating the franchise's 30th anniversary programme and developing two forthcoming titles, Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider Catalyst, in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog and Eidos Montreal.
