XBOX SHOWCASES TOMB RAIDER LEGACY OF ATLANTIS AT GAMESCOM

The Xbox showcase at Gamescom featured a segment on Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis, with developers from Flying Wild Hog and Crystal Dynamics providing commentary on the puzzles in Peru, traversal mechanics, and the iconic T-Rex encounter. The broadcast is available to watch in full on the official Xbox YouTube channel.

Introducing the gameplay segment, which showed Lara Croft solving the cog puzzle, opening the gates to Qualopec, and encountering raptors and the iconic T-Rex, Experience Director Jeff Adams explained that reimagining iconic locations is about retaining what made them memorable while introducing fresh challenges, surprises and experiences for both new and returning players.

"Reimagining means preserving the things that make those iconic locations recognisable, we want to make sure that we are preserving that core DNA, but we also want to make sure that we're finding new ways to introduce new challenges, new delights, new surprises for our players. If you're a new fan that's never played before, you come in and you see a really cool game experience, but if you are a fan who has played before, we want you to come in and actually have that first play experience all over again," said Adams.

Responding to striking a balance between nostalgia and new experiences for players, Adams said: "It's a delicate balance, it's an exciting opportunity and a chance to get under the hood and see what we can do. But it's also an incredible responsibility because we know that there are people that have so many strong memories. Lara has become so part of people's personas that we want to make sure that those fans are seen, but at the same time also give them a chance to experience something new with the character."

"We take it very seriously, and everything we change, everything we modify, we do because we feel like it's what the original developers of the game probably were getting at but were just constrained by the tools at the time," Adams adds.

Developed by Flying Wild Hog in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is based on Lara Croft's original adventure, developed by Core Design, and the first remake, Tomb Raider Anniversary, developed by Crystal Dynamics. The game features updated visuals, revised gameplay systems and additional narrative content. The structure and setting of the original release is retained, while adapting it for current hardware platforms.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the story centres on the search for the scattered fragments of the Scion, an ancient artefact linked to Atlantis. Players will explore multiple locations, navigate environmental hazards and complete traversal and puzzle-based sequences. Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on 12 February 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
