ALIX WILTON REGAN TALKS CLASSIC LARA, SOPHIE TURNER AND TOMB RAIDER

In an interview with Variety, Alix Wilton Regan discussed her portrayal of Lara Croft in Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics' upcoming Tomb Raider titles, Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider Catalyst. During the interview, she spoke about the differences between her performances in the two games, the influences behind her interpretation of Lara, her conversations with Sophie Turner following their respective castings, and her approach to adapting the character for an interactive medium.

Regan said she approached the character differently in each game, explaining that Lara in Legacy of Atlantis is intended to feel "ever so slightly younger and more wide-eyed and slightly more innocent" than in Catalyst. She said this reflects the chronology of the games, with Legacy of Atlantis taking place earlier while still portraying a version of Lara who has already experienced the events of the Survivor trilogy.

Regan told Variety that her performance draws on several previous interpretations of the character. She said the development team wanted to return to "classic Lara territory", taking inspiration from the first three Tomb Raider games, the Angelina Jolie films, and Camilla Luddington's portrayal of Lara in the Survivor trilogy. According to Regan, the writing incorporates "that kind of wit, that high level intelligence, that very dry sense of British humour", while maintaining continuity with the character's more recent appearances.

Regan also confirmed that she has spoken with Sophie Turner, who will portray Lara Croft in Amazon's live-action Tomb Raider television series. She told Variety that the two knew each other socially before either role was publicly announced and later exchanged messages after her own casting was revealed. However, Regan said they have not discussed their respective interpretations of the character, explaining that she did not think it would be "either appropriate or fair" while Turner is developing her own performance.

Discussing the differences between video games and television, Regan said she has focused on portraying Lara as "grounded", "strong" and "capable", reflecting the interactive nature of games. She said she has also sought to remain "true to the core of classic Lara", which she described as "the directive for these new games". Regan added that she wants established fans to experience a familiar version of Lara while new players experience the character for the first time.

Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis, scheduled for release in February 2027, is based on the original 1996 title developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive. It includes modern graphics, new gameplay systems, and additional story content, while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. Tomb Raider Catalyst, planned for release in 2027, is positioned as the next mainline instalment and follows the character Lara Croft in a narrative set in Northern India. Both titles are built using Unreal Engine 5 and are intended for release on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms.
