[ January 24th 2006 ]

U.S. archaeologists from Johns Hopkins University have unearthed a statue of Queen Tiy, one of the most important women in ancient Egypt and wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, Associated Press reports today. The statue, mostly intact, was found under a statue of Amenhotep III in the sprawling Karnak Temple in Luxor, which was a royal city in ancient Egypt.

Nebmaatre Amenhotep III was an Egyptian Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty. According to different authors he ruled ca. 1389 BC-1351 BC, or 1391 BC-1353 BC, following on from his father Thutmose IV. With his Chief Queen Tiy, he fathered his second son, Akhenaten, who succeeded him on the throne.
