Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie on Wednesday described the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region as unbelievably horrible after a three-day visit to region. Jolie, a good will ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, has visited refugees in many conflict-torn countries but said Darfur struck her as the worst she had seen because the rights abuses and violence continued and nowhere was safe. I'd say this is the worst situation I've seen and what's happening to the people here... is unbelievably horrible. The fact is it is just one of the worst things that has happened on the planet to a people, she said.

Global icon Nelson Mandela today joined forces with leading charity Help the Aged in calling for people from the South West to nominate their sporting heroes as part of the nationwide 2005 Living Legend Award scheme. The initiative is open to individuals, aged 60 or over, who have shown that age need not be a barrier to physical pursuits or have devoted their time and sporting talent to help others.

The tomb-raiding exploits of Lara Croft or the adventures of the cuddly ogre Shrek can help children's social and educational development, according to researchers calling for computer games to be part of the school curriculum. Far from being an obesity-inducing, violence-promoting threat to society, as they are often portrayed, the games being played in bedrooms across the country during half term can be used in the classroom to help children learn concepts such as critical appreciation of narrative structure or character development which they might otherwise study in a novel, say academics at London University's Institute of Education.
