Level 3: Bartoli's Hideout

You begin the level in the boat. Drive forwards and the gates will open. Drive the boat outside and park it next to the wooden ledge. You will not use the boat again, so dismount and leave it. Once you dismount, kill the two rats. Go up the steps and kill two more rats just around the corner. A bad guy is coming outside, so stay sharp. When you kill him, pick up his Small Medi Pack and enter the hallway. Climb on the ledge, kill two more rats and use the switch to open the doors of the building where you left the boat. As you can see, a bad guy exited from there. Draw weapons and wait for him to come. Start shooting as soon as he enters the hallway. Once he is history, pick up his Small Medi Pack and return back where you left the boat.

Inside the building - Enter cautiously. Two thugs are lurking inside – one on the balcony and one behind the column. First, stay at the entrance (do not step inside) and kill the one on the balcony. Then get inside and take care of the second. Pick up the Shotgun Shells the second thug dropped and go to the left hand side of the room, where the windows with the blue curtains are. Shoot the windows and kill the two Dobermans that attack. Enter the courtyard and pick up the Small Medi Pack, Flares and Automatic Pistol Clips (or a pair of Automatic Pistols if you do not have them).

Enter the room again and go to the left where the mechanical statues with the swords are. Proceed carefully, because they will start moving their swords. Stand on the right hand side of the hallway and run when they move their sword upwards. Use the switch in the dark room to open a door outside to the canal. Return back to the main room. The statues do not move their swords now.

There are some wooden ramps opposite the entrance and only one of them is sloped (as shown in this screenshot). Stand having the entrance to your back and jump up to grab the backside of the sloped ramp. Pull up, slide a bit and jump to grab the wooden platform ahead. Or, back flip onto the sloped ramp and keep pressing the Jump buton. Press Action to grab the platform. Pull up and go the left. Push the movable block twice to unblock your way. Turn left and take a running jump to the balcony where the thug is laying dead. Or, from the ground jump up to grab the ladder to the left of the entrance (if you face it) and climb up it. Then climb to the left and drop to the balcony. Pick up the Automatic Pistol Clips from the dead thug and grab the ladder. Climb to the right and drop to the ledge next to the opening.

Balconies and awnings – Step outside and kill the thug from the balcony on the right hand side. Go to the left where there are no railings and take a running jump to grab the awning. Shimmy to the left and, when you reach the end, pull up and back-flip to the balcony behind (as shown in this screenshot). Walk up to the edge and take a running jump to grab the wooden square ledge; pull up. Take another running jump to the next awning on the right. The entrance is below on the opposite side. Take a standing jump towards the entrance, pressing Action to avoid hitting on the wall. Alternatively, drop to the platform below the awning and take a running jump to the entrance.

Inside the building again Two Dobermans are running down the stairs. Jump back to the platform beneath the awning and kill them from safety. Jump back to the entrance and go up the stairs. A thug emerges from inside the next room, so take care of him.

1st Secret – Enter the room and locate the nicely-hidden switch on the left (see this screenshot). This opens the door just outside the entrance. Follow it to reach the balcony where the thug was shooting from before. Pick up his Shotgun Shells and the Silver Dragon.

Return to the room where you used the switch and shoot the window at the other side. There is a thug outside. If you do not want to lose health, climb on the windowsill to alert him and hop backwards into the room with your weapons drawn. As soon as he comes, shoot him whilst side-jumping to the left and right. Do the same until he is dead and pick up the two sets of Uzi Clips he drops.

Room with fireplace – Go to the other side of the balcony. Shoot the window and step inside. A thug and his Doberman emerge from the doors on the right hand side and one more thug from behind you. Do not stay on the windowsill. Enter the room and kill them by jumping around.

(Alternative method – As soon as you step on the sill and the baddies and dog appear, run/ jump past them, through the door and down the steps. Before reaching the canal, turn around and shoot them as they are approaching. Be careful not to fall in the water, because you will have to take the long route again. Normally, you should not have trouble, as the thugs are armed with bats, and they can harm you only when they get near you. Be careful, though, as the Doberman is faster than them, and it bites badly. Then return back up the stairs and through the open doors in the room with the fireplace.)

Enter the fireplace. The back wall contains a movable block, so push it twice. Climb on it, then on the ledge to the left. Kill the rat and follow the passage to reach a ramp with two still blades. They will start moving when you slide down. So, walk to the edge of the ramp and tap back once. Take a standing jump over the first blade and keep pressing the Jump button. Lara will jump over the second blade and land at the bottom of the ramp without losing health at all. Alternatively, stand at the edge of the ramp where the first blade is and side-step to the right, so that Lara is actually touching the wall with her right arm and foot. Angle her a bit to the right and take two walking steps back, away from the edge. Make a standing jump to the right and Lara will jump over the blade and land in the pool of water below, totally avoiding the blade trap. Climb on the platform from the low ledge on the right, at the bottom of the ramp.

Getting past the four burners – There are four burners that shut off when you step on the wooden tile in front of the first burner. You have just a few seconds to make it across, but the countdown begings when you step off the wooden tile. To clear this trap, stand at the back of the wooden tile and take a standing jump to land in front of the first burner. Now take standing jumps to the rest of the burners until you reach the other side. If you catch fire, either load your game or drop into the pool to extinguish Lara. Once you are done, approach the door that opens automatically. A thug and two Dobermans are down inside. Take care of them from here and then drop down.

Room with three chandeliers – (The following sequence is shown in this page.) Climb on the ledge beneath the low chandelier (which is close to the entrance) and from the highest point, jump up to grab the chandelier; pull up. Turn around and take a running jump to grab the middle chandelier; pull up. Turn right and take a running jump to the wooden platform. Use the switch to reveal an opening behind the painting at the other side of the room. Take a running jump back to the middle chandelier and turn right. Take another running jump to grab the third (higher) chandelier and pull up. Climb on the wooden platform and kill the two rats that are coming from the right.

Go to the right behind the column (where the rats came from) and grab the wooden rafter above. Shimmy to the right and pull up. Take a running jump to the wooden platform ahead and draw your weapons. As soon as you the reach the brick wall, a thug appears from behind. Kill him and pick up his Small Medi Pack. Climb on the brick wall and turn right. Jump to the other part of the rafter and use the switch to change the height of the first and third chandeliers (the low one has become the highest and the high has become the lowest). Jump back to the brick wall and drop to the wooden platform on the left.

Carefully drop to the first chandelier, which is now the highest. Walk up to the edge and take a standing jump to the middle chandelier. Take a standing jump to land on the third (lowest) chandelier and turn left to face the opening behind the painting. Take a running jump to grab the edge and pull up. Pick up the Library Key and jump back to the lowest chandelier. Then take a running jump to grab the middle one and pull up. Take a diagonal running jump to the platform on the right (where the windows are) and use the switch to open a trapdoor behind the fireplace. Shoot the windows and exit.

The pool below leads to a room that you can enter through some broken windows. From there, you can go for the 2nd Secret, but in order to continue, you will have to return back by using the ladder in the pool. Instead of backtracking, go to the right of the ledge you just exited to reach an opening. Hang from the edge and drop down, through the trapdoor behind the fireplace, and into the pool below.

2nd Secret – Before using the Library Key, pull the underwater lever to open the door to the right of the lever. This gives you the access to the next flooded room. You can see the broken windows on the left, but you need to swim through the underwater passage on the right. Light a Flare to see clearly and dive down (refer to this diagram if you cannot find your way). Pass the stairs and turn right. Swim through the opening and then through the next one (the crawlspace on the left leads to the same area). When you reach the last room, look for the Gold Dragon in the right hand corner and two pairs of Grenades in the left one. If you badly need some air, locate the lever opposite the Dragon. This opens a trapdoor exactly above. Surface if you need it and then dive back down to get the pick-ups. Once you are done, swim back to the pool next to the library.

Into the library – Use the Library Key to open the doors and enter. When you are ready to enter the main hall, the doors close behind you and a thug appears from the room ahead. If you stay here and start shooting at him as soon as he appears and (if necessary) jump backwards once, you will not have a problem. Once he is dead, pick up his Small Medi Pack.

(Note – If you want, you can take a shortcut here and end the level. You will miss many pick-ups and kills, but not the level's final Secret. If you are interested, check the Note at the end of the page.)

Go to the room where the thug came from (the only open door at the moment) to reach a small library. When you reach the area beneath an opening, climb one of the bookcases to reach the top. Kill the two rats and climb on the low bookcase block to use the switch that opens one of the doors back in the main hall. A thug emerges from inside, so keep your eyes open. Drop back down, return to the main hall and kill him. Go through the doors he came from (the ones you just opened - to the right as you return back to the main hall).

Room with tall bookcases - Climb up the bookcases on the left until you reach the top. Pull up, turn around and jump to the wooden platform below (as shown here). Climb up the bookcase on the left to reach the top ledge of the room and take a standing jump to the windowsill. Shoot the windows and exit. Slide down the awning and jump to land on the small balcony at the other side (or slide down backwards, grab the awning, pull up and back-flip). Take a running jump to the roof beneath the awning and jump to the brick wall on the right hand side.

Go to the right of the wall and, from the highest point, take a running jump to grab the roof of the building (as shown in this screenshot). Pull up and go to the far left where the chimney is. Carefully take a standing jump to the brick wall, pressing Action to avoid hitting on the arch above. Climb down the ladder at the other side to land into the pool below. Pick up a pair of Uzis and climb back up.

Drop to the wooden platform below and go around the building to the left. If you fall into the water, locate the low ledge in the corner of the platform. Kill the thug that is lurking inside and pick up the Automatic Pistol Clips he drops. Get the Detonator Key from the table and jump into the water. Climb on the ledge with the closed door. It opens automatically and a thug is waiting behind. Kill him and pick up his Large Medi Pack. If you did not do it before, shoot the windows and return back to the main hall.

Use the switch to open the remaining doors and draw your weapons. Two thugs will burst in from the courtyard and they will start shooting. So, better equip a powerful weapon, like the Automatic Pistols (Lara needs a lot of time to load each Shotgun Shell). Once they are dead, pick up their Shotgun Shells and Uzi Clips and exit to the courtyard. The door opens as you approach, so jump into the water and swim to the far left. Climb on the ledge, kill the rat and climb on the walkway to the left.

3rd Secret – Do not use the detonator or you will miss the Secret. Pass the detonator and climb on the brick wall above the courtyard you passed before. Go to the end and climb on the block, then on the roof above (see this screenshot to get oriented). Shoot the windows and get the Jade Dragon (plus four sets of Shotgun Shells as a reward for finding all the Secrets). Exit, drop to the wall and return to the detonator.

Use the Detonator Key to explode the opposite wall where you got the Secret. A thug who probably woke up from the explosion starts shooting from the balcony on the left. Take care of him, climb on the brick wall again and go to the end. There is nothing in the pool below, so jump to the wooden platform. Go to the right hand corner and climb on the platform above (where the Secret used to be). Jump to the blocks at the other side and climb to the roof above. Follow the passage and slide down the ramp to end the level.


Note about skipping the rest of the level – As soon as you enter the library and kill the thug that emerges from ahead, use the switch on the right hand side to open the doors. Kill the two thugs and pick up their Shotgun Shells and Uzi Clips. Shoot the windows on the left and exit to the courtyard. The door opens as you approach, so jump into the water and swim to the left. Climb on the ledge, kill the rat and then climb on the walkway. Pass the detonator and climb on the wall. Follow it to the left and climb on the block, then on the roof (the Jade Dragon is behind the windows if you want it). Go to the other side of the roof and climb on the wall to the right. You may need to press only Action and Forward. Pressing Jump will not help (see this screenshot if you are not sure where you need to climb). Follow the passage and slide down the ramp to end the level.
